Thu Jul 22, 2010 Description
Patience finally paid off! Nikon D3000 w/ 55-200mm lens Manual setting (!) f/5.6, 200mm focal length, ISO 400, 1/400sec. shutter speed. This little guy showed up before I was set up. No flash, hand held, auto focus. I feel bad about using the flash in their little eyes, but did use it later on. Gosh, the colour is icky when reduced to 72 ppi. I have to work on that. Monitor is colour optimized for printing, is that the problem? Thank you to the knowledgable Jennifer for pointing me in the right direction and taking the time to provide links that I should have googled for myself. Actions |

Thu Jul 22, 2010 7:13am Great photo - I don't see any problem with the color, but then again, I don't know what the original out of your camera looks like. Now, I gotta ask - how long did you have to wait to get that shot? Wish I had hummingbirds here (in VA) ... |

Thu Jul 22, 2010 7:36am Thank you Katherine! I didn't have to wait long at all for this one; but feel like I've been waiting for months for everything to come together. This must have been almost the first shot of the day, the others are at 1/200 and using the flash. In those shots, the wings are a blur. The lighting was great here, the setting sun was at my back and shining right into this little area of garden, otherwise it would have been too dark without the flash. ps I love the support and encouragment here at DHD, it really does make me try harder. |

Thu Jul 22, 2010 7:59am Heidi, I love it! What a cute hummie you have, and I love the composition of this picture. Great focus right on the eye. Thanks for providing your technical info. I still want to try and get some hummingbird shots, but right now it's 110 here during the days and they only come by once every 1/2 hour or so...I will probably wait until fall. Please post more pics if you get them! Definitely worth the wait, right?

Thu Jul 22, 2010 8:01am Oh, I also don't think your color is icky either, but I know what you mean in general about photos looking somewhat "blah" when they are reduced for web. I hate the grainy cheapy look that everything gets when it is small. I wonder if there are techniques to make small photos & layouts still look crisp? |

Thu Jul 22, 2010 8:11am I'm finding the reds and greens are much muddier at 72 ppi than at 300 ppi. I did use Bicubic sharper and Save for Web. Still, it was well worth the wait and I'm hyped for more! If it looks yuck when printed (at 300 ppi) I'll be back in the forum with more questions. |
