The Selby Gardens is distinguished from other Botanical gardens in the US by its emphasis on epiphytes, plants that do not root in soil, such as orchids, mosses, and bromeliads. About 20,000 plants grace the premises including nearly 6,000 orchids. The facility is both open-air and under glass. The Selby mansion now houses the Gardens’ museum.
