Welcome to our monthly Speed Scrap! If you're new to the Speed Scrap, keep this window open and hop on over to the DHD Chat Room - you'll find a few of us over there.

As a refresher, we'll begin at 8:00 pm (MST) with your shopping list for tonight. Then, at 10-minute intervals, I'll post a step to help you create a page. After the last step is posted (at 9:00 pm MST), you can post your page or use one additional hour to tweak things or start all over again. We have a gallery set up for the speed scraps, so post your completed pages in there.

I'll be giving away prizes in the form of DHD gift certificates. One lucky winner will receive a $15 DHD gift certificate, and two people will receive $5 each. In order to be eligible for the $15 GC, you need to get your layout into the speed scrap gallery before the end of the two-hour deadline, i.e., no later than 10:00 pm MST; I'll do a random drawing. I won't check the layouts until tomorrow morning, but will be posting mine around 10:00 pm, so you need to have yours up before I do! Everyone who posts, before or after the deadline, will be eligible for the drawing of the two $5 GC's. You don't have to use DHD products (as we have an open gallery), but, of course, we'd love to see what you do with the DHD kits.

Let's get started, shall we?

Shopping List

Three patterned papers – two subtle patterns, one bold
One solid paper (about 6” x 8”, portrait/vertical) or journaling-type card, enlarged
One scallop-edged element, straight edge (not circular)
Stitching – one larger straight line of stitching, one smaller circular stitching
Two photos (about 3” x 3.5”, portrait/vertical)
Photo frame(s) – one frame, like a film strip, or two separate frames
One large cluster or grouping of circular elements – chipboard, stickers, brushes, stitching … keep the elements fairly flat.
Three word strips or plain paper to create your own (one larger for title; two smaller accent pieces)
One circular element such as a tag or chipboard circle – plain/solid (no wordart, pattern, etc.)
One ribbon – twisted/curled, not flat/straight
One finishing element for layering – butterfly, flower, etc.; something with dimension (not too small or too large ... 1" 'ish)

The Foundation

Grab your three patterned papers. Resize the bolder design and one of the more-subtle ones to 11”x11” (assuming you are working on a 12”x12” canvas; reduce size by 1” if working on 8.5”x11”). Layer: Subtle pattern (full size), bold pattern (11x11), subtle pattern (11x11). The smaller papers should be centered on the page. Rotate the top page slightly counter-clockwise (you knew I was going to rotate things, right?! LOL), and rotate the bold paper a little clockwise. What you’re creating is a staggered look to the papers, and a way for the bold pattern to peek through without being totally overpowering.

Center It

Did you pick a coordinating solid paper, or a journaling card that you are going to enlarge? Put this element down as your next layer, right on top of the patterned papers, pretty much centered on the page. Remember, this is portrait or vertical.

Add the scallop-edged element under the left-hand edge of the paper/card (scallops “pointing” towards the left-hand side of the layout). The scallops should not extend beyond the top and bottom of the paper/card – if it does, crop the element or resize it. To finish this section off, add a row of straight stitching – top to bottom – just to the right of the left edge of the paper/card (to look like you’ve stitched the paper to the scalloped element).

Picture It

Focusing on the left half of your solid paper/journaling card, add your photos. Stack them in a vertical column, one and then the other (if you've chosen to use a film-strip-type frame, this work is done for you ;) ). The photos are about a half inch in from the left edge of your paper/card, and start about a quarter inch from the top – just enough so the paper/card can be seen at the top. The photos should not go all the way to the bottom edge of the card – you’ll need about 1” or so at the bottom for a few things later on.

Add your frame(s).

Circling the Wagons

With everything loaded towards the left half of your paper/card, you should have a nice space on the right, a vertical space of about 2.5” wide or so. Fill this space with your clustered circular elements (chipboard, stickers, stitching), pretty much from top to bottom on the paper/card. If things spill over on the right-hand vertical edge a bit, that’s okay. Vary the size of your elements, just for visual interest. Do not overcrowd so much that you can’t see the paper/card underneath – you still want some of it to peek through.

No elements go on top of your photo or frames – they are all tucked underneath, if you have some that go near the edges of the photos.

We’re doing things a little bit out of the normal order tonight – let’s get that title and pesky wordstrips taken care of, shall we?

Title. The title goes on a strip of paper or is a wordstrip that a designer has already created. It should be about 3” wide (resize if you have to), and sit right under your bottom photo, towards the bottom edge of the paper/card element. Leave a little bit of space under the title so you can add date/time/place journaling (just a few words).

(I've used a Polaroid-style film strip for my photo frames, so I put my title – for example – right on top of the thicker white space at the bottom of the frame. This is just another option for you if you used a Polaroid frame.)

Journaling. The two smaller wordstrips are for your journaling (or may already be printed with a sentiment that goes with your page). If you’re creating your own strips, they should be about 2-2.5” wide, just big enough for 3-4 words. Place the strips in the upper right-hand corner of your paper/card background – on top of the circular elements, if you have any in the corner – starting at about one quarter to one half of an inch down from the top. Both strips spill over the right edge of the paper/card, the top one by nearly three-quarters of an inch, the second (lower) one by about half and inch; keep a small gap between the two strips.

Clustering Touches

Grab your circular tag, chipboard, medallion – what did you pick? You want something about 2-2.25” in diameter, so resize if you need to. This element goes on top of everything - it might very well go on top of your circular “spray” of elements, your photos, the frame, and your title. Phew! LOL Place this circular element along the bottom edge of your paper/card. Position it so that the right-hand edge of your element is about 1” away from the right-hand edge of the paper/card. The circle also spills over the bottom edge of the paper/card – by about half an inch.

Add your small circular stitching on top of this tag/chipboard/medallion item, about a quarter inch in from the outer edge.

Do you know what you have left from your supply list? Ribbon and a dimensional “finishing” element of some sort. The ribbon goes on top of the circular element you just laid down. It should be placed in a somewhat horizontal line – but since it’s twisted and curled, a little up and down with the ribbon is to be expected. Make sure you’re not using a flat or straight piece of ribbon. In addition to a horizontal direction, the ribbon runs about center through the circle (top to bottom) and spills over both the left and right edge – but more on the right.

The final element is a butterfly, flower, or something with dimension. This goes on top of the ribbon, basically centered on the circle tag/medallion. This element should not be so large that it covers up the tag or the stitching – you want to be able to see both of these. Similarly, the curled ribbon shouldn’t cover up the elements underneath.

Once you’re done, your cluster should be complete. Layered from bottom to top: chipboard medallion, stitching, ribbon, flower/butterfly.

Voila!
You are done.
Breathe.

So now we're into the bonus time for our Speed Scrap. Remember, in order to be eligible for the major gift prize, you have to complete your layout AND get it posted in the gallery before I post mine (at 10:00 pm MST | Midnight EST).

Good luck - and can't wait to see what you created!
