So. . . last night, my oldest son had a night soccer game. There are lights, astroturf and bleachers. We are there watching the team play and our other 3 kids are in the bleachers behind us. Our 2 yo wants to play in the bleachers and we are constantly having to tell him to stop before he hurts himself. Then, my 7 yo daughter is just walking up the bleachers to sit by her sister and trips, falls forward and "face plants" (as she described it to the x-ray tech) into the metal bleacher bench.
As I watch, the bridge of her nose swells SO FAST it is scary. My husband says, "That's broken". And off we go to the ER. We left my 12 yo with his teammates to finish the game and took the rest of the family.
The hospital got her back fairly quickly. The accident happened right around 8 pm and we got out of the hospital at 10:40. Of course, she felt like it took forever because her sister and brother got to stay out in the waiting room watching TV and she just had me to keep her company. She was so brave though and was still laughing and singing and chatting while waiting. They took x-rays that didn't show any breaks, but she said that the swelling could still hide something and that we needed to keep an eye on it as the swelling went down.
Talk about a SERIOUS deviation from how the evening was SUPPOSED to go!
I was so relieved that it wasn't broken though.

Wow, glad she's okay - sounds like quite the trooper. But boy, I bet she's going to have some nice black eyes to go with that swelling - ouch.

how scary! I'm glad she's ok (considering it could have been worse!), although it sounds painful and yucky nonetheless. I hope she heals up quickly!

as if to underscore how my life is on any given day, I want to share this clip from Parenthood:

My oldest daughter scored her first goal today at her soccer game. We were jumping up and down screaming and crying. We were so proud. She played so great.

My DD#1 has broken her nose probably at least 6 times. The first time she was 12, and we were at a weekend camp for families affected by childhood cancers. The kids and some of the grownups were playing Ultimate Frisbee (similar to both football and rugby) when she collided with a dad who weighed twice as much as she did. She went down on her face and came up with grass in her teeth. I was facilitating a workshop at the time so I didn't find out about it until the next day in the car on the way home. She said, "Mom, is my nose supposed to do this?" and when I looked in the rear view she was flipping it back and forth like a light switch. No bruising, no black eyes, just this hypermobile nose! She has a slight bump where the cartilage attaches to the bone now, but it's straight with no deviated septum. And she still plays Ultimate.

Meagan, I hope your little one recovers without any trouble, and that her experience doesn't make her reluctant to live her life!

So, back to school tomorrow and my daughter is a little worried about what all the kids will say. She has 2 black eyes.
I hope they don't bother her to much.
