Wikipedia defines lens flare as the light scattered in a lens system which manifests itself "as several starbursts, rings, or circles in a row across the image or view. Lens flare patterns typically spread widely across the scene and change location with the camera's movement relative to light sources, tracking with the light position and fading as the camera points away from the bright light until it causes no flare at all. The specific spatial distribution of the flare depends on the shape of the aperture of the image formation elements. For example, if the lens has a 6-bladed aperture, the flare may have a hexagonal pattern."
Lens flare is often used as a creative way to add drama or draw attention to a certain part of a photo or composition. Your photo challenge this month is to post an image with lens or sun flare. I would like to share three ways to add this look to your photos. The first way is to simply capture the lens or sun flare in the image as you compose your photograph as demonstrated in my photo below.

Another way to obtain this look is to create it in your photo editing program. I use Photoshop and used the steps outlined below. Here you will see the original photo and then the photo with a lens flare added.

1. Open Photoshop, open the image
2. Go to Filters, then go to Renders and then choose Lens Flare
3. Move the target by using left mouse to wherever you want the flare to starts
4. Adjust the brightness level as desired
5. Select the lens type
6. Select ok
The third way I would like to share with you for achieving this creative look is to use a wonderful product available here at DHD - Sunflare Photo Overlays by MaryAnn Wise (click

And here are before and after of an image that I enhanced with these overlays.

I look forward to viewing your photos. At the end of the month, I’ll randomly draw the name of one challenge participant who will receive a $5 gift certificate to the DHD shop.
