When you reach for photos to scrap, do you find you use close-up shots (or crop them in close) more often, or those that show the scene around and have more in the pic?

I tend to leave a lot of my vacation shots with the background, to help get a feel of where we were, what we were doing, etc. But most of the time, I'm finding a like a closer crop on my non-vacation photos. I'm really working on portraits, so I think closer works better for those.

I shoot mostly close up but I'm not sure I'm happy with that! :? For example, my family is small, about 20 of us so our reunion is really just hanging out for the day. I did a good job of getting photos of everyone but they are just close up shots, nothing is in context really except for a single group shot. Probably going to start rethinking how I shoot as a result and try to get a better mix of shots.

Good question! I tend to do close up shots, I think. I don't like a lot of background stuff unless we're outdoors. No one wants to see my messy Adam's family house in the background!

Thank you for the tips. I had this doubt too.

I try to do a mix of both. Most of the time I like close up photos, as I feel they capture some great moments. Although, I do find that if I'm wanting to tell a story with the background I take farther shots.

I'm the same as toadhughes. I love close-ups, but depending on what story I'm trying to tell I make sure that I get the whole shot if I need it for my story.

I don't think I have a tendency to do one more than the other. It depends on the context of the page. If it's the story of an adventure then I'd probably use the whole picture and maybe add a few small crops to draw the attention on some details.

I do a mixture, but probably more area than close-up. I like to make sure I get the clothes the people are wearing, because at times I want to remember that or want my son to remember. Weird, I know.
