Ok, so I am hoping to get a new camera in the next few months.....right now I am using a point and shoot Canon that is my work camera. (no, I am not a professional by any means and I have to wind my way thru the point and shoot, but it works for what I need it for to at work!) This is an example of a pic that I took with my point and shoot (no editing whatsoever)...but I am wanting to be able to "catch" shots that I just can't because of the lag time in a point and shoot. The pups just do NOT want to slow down for me to take a pic! And I am saying up front, I WILL definitely be taking a class or two or three for all things! I need all the help I can get! I "think" I have it narrowed down to two different ones: A Canon T1i or a Nikon D5000. I know there is a Canon T2i, but I don't care all that much about the video....I am getting a camera to shoot pics...not video. From what I can tell both of these are similar....a few mega pixels difference, I know of. This is about the price range I was thinking of...I know a lot of people say to just get the body and then get a lens you want...but for right now I have no idea what type of lens I am going to want and the kit lens will get me started. Does anyone have any experience with either camera? Any advice is greatly appreciated!! I have been on Rockwell's site and he seems to prefer Nikon's, but I know from just looking that the Canon/Nikon debate will go on for a long time! And he almost has me talked into a Nikon....but I keep going back and forth!

d5000 focuses and shoots faster than the Canon.

I've been playing this game for the past 3 months and finally settled on the Nikon D5000. Ken Rockwell strongly suggested it and said all you need is the kit lens plus that camera. It's that good. If your pictures aren't turning out well, it's because you're not a good photographer and you need to keep working at it.
Also, someone on here said they dumped all their Canon equipment and lenses for Nikon because Nikon focuses better. That is a testament to Nikon.
And Adorama had a refurbished D5000 that was affordable.

i have all canon equipment. I love canon, but was recently told by my photog friend that nikon has faster focus. My friend has all canon too, but she said if she didnt have all the money invested in canon, she would do nikon. Nikon has like 97 focus points or something ridiculous like that. She said her photog friend, who just got nikon, stops action like canon never could.

I have a Nikon D300 and it is amazing. I shoot in auto alot because it does everything so well. But yes there will always be that debate. karen Russell switched all her Canon stuff for Nikon. She shoots with a D700

Mmmm.....thoughts of food for thought! Thanks for the input....I may have to look at the NIkon closer now. I did a lot of surfing on Rockwell last night after posting this....and he has me almost convinced!
Thanks everyone!

I don't have any camera info for you but I wanted to post that I adore your dog (if that is a pic of your dog!). We used to have a pembroke corgi ... he was so sweet! My husband's friend's mom is a breeder.

toni - that may have been me....
I dumped all my Canon gear last year (I had a 5D and about 5 or 6 lenses - most of them professional L lenses) for the Nikon d700 (and equal lenses).....I LOVE my Nikon!

Yes, it's a corgi...Cardigan Corgi to be exact...there are three of them in the household!!!
And we used to have a Pembroke, but she passed away 2 years ago....I miss her terribly. She was the alpha of the dogs and the household has been in somewhat of an uproar since she left, try to establish pack order.
I will take any suggestions I get on cameras....although thinking Nikon is slightly leading after coming here and Rockwell's site!!!!
