4 Play

Hi all! Decorator Shannon here with your second week of 4 Play. I’ve picked four different kits that we’ve mixed and matched into 4 unique layouts. Using multiple kits is one of my favorite things to do. I hope you’ll play along with us!

The four kits I chose this week are:

(Remarkable elements by Karla Dudley, Clear Essentials 1 by Karla Dudley, Oceanside by Robyn Meierotto, Barely There Masks by Tiffany Tillman)

Layout by Shannon Dombkowski

I love the bright colors in Robyn’s kit and wanted to play them up by pairing the papers with more neutral kits. The colors make me think of having fun outdoors so, naturally, I chose a picture of my daughter playing outside. And I love using Karla’s clear elements because they add a bit of decoration without needing to add any more color.

Layout by Allison Waken

Allison says: “It was fun playing with these 4 kits and seeing them in new ways! I chose to keep my layout pretty simple while still adding some fun elements here and there.”

Layout by Jen Papadimitriou

Jen says: “Combining these kits made it super easy to find enough product to create my page. There is something so freeing about being told what to use! I loved the silver rimmed tags – it reminded me of my ‘old school’ stash, so I clipped a bunch of patterns to each one. I then used the grid brush behind everything to add some texture and finished it off with an awesome word art!”

Layout by Renee Fink

Renee says: “I loved the challenge to combine kits that, at first glance, didn’t seem to match. I tend to be a kit scrapper and don’t mix and match kits very often but found the challenge to match the papers and elements to be interesting. I was able to combine the red and white papers with the navy element to create a page that doesn’t resemble any of the kits that were part of this challenge. After adding the grid brush element and a set of staples this page is ready to put into the album.”

It’s awesome what you can come up with when you limit the supplies you use.

Don’t forget that today only (ends Monday at midnight PST), you can get each of these kits for only a dollar, and one is even FREE! So go grab them, and then play along… Upload a layout using these four kits to the DHD gallery by Sunday, then come back here and post a link to it. Not only will you learn to stretch your kits, but you could win a gift certificate to DHD!

(Congrats to MamaBug, our winner from last week! You’ve got a gift certificate coming your way!)

Layout of the Week

This time, it’s a double!  I skipped out last week (don’t tell Gen) so today I am posting TWO of my picks for LOTW.

I had a very enjoyable time browsing through the galleries.  I always find lots of great layouts and inspiration there!  For the week of July 25th, I selected the layout titled “Fun on the Water” by snappystamper because I am a sucker for big polka dots and lots of patterned papers.  They always catch my eye.  The touches of red and worn paper are another part of this layout that I really like.  The placement of all the elements on this layout are so neat and interesting too!

Congratulations snappystamper, you’ve won a $5 DHD gift certificate! Thanks for sharing your lovely layout with us!

For the week of August 1 (really, already?) I picked a layout titled “And Then…” by itsmeamanda.  I love how she showcased that fabulous photo (check out those blue eyes!)  and used a brush type mask to have the photo peek through the paper.  I also like that she kept it pretty simple with the photo as a focus and added plenty of journaling.

Congratulations itsmeamanda, you too have won a $5 DHD gift certificate!  Thanks for sharing  this layout with us!

Layout of the Week

Hello! DHD Decorator, Jen Flaherty, here with this week’s Layout of the Week! This is my first blog post and my first time choosing the LOTW and let me tell you…it was hard! The gallery is busting with gorgeous layouts showcasing some amazing talent around here! Pure eye candy! However, after several go throughs, I kept coming back to this beauty by Sokee, appropriately titled, Beautiful:

I was drawn in by her excellent use of white space and how perfectly balanced the page is. The stitching is used so creatively to draw your eye from the upper left side of the page, around the (ridiculously cute!) photo and back down to the right side of the page. The minimal elements and wordart add just the right amount of interest, without detracting from the expertly crafted delicate design. I will definitely be lifting this one soon!  Congratulations to Sokee, who wins a gift certificate to the DHD shop for sharing this beautiful layout with us!

Layout of the Week!

Decorator Jen P. here ready to choose another fabulous Layout of the Week from our gallery! It was really tough to choose just one, as there were so many wonderful layouts this week! But this one caught my eye immediately:

I chose Linnepin’s There is a Garden layout because I couldn’t help but  smile at this adorable photo.  Not only are the colours so vibrant, but the angle of this sweet boy is perfect. I feel like I’m right there with him.  But even more impressive is her flawless brush work and blending modes! Wow! This layout definitely needs to be showcased this week.

Well done Linnepin, and congratulations – you’ve won a $5 gift certificate to the DHD store!

How To Make A Hybrid Halloween Countdown Calendar – Hybrid Halloween Tutorial

October is a busy time in our house, with decorating, planning parties, and of course getting ready for Halloween! To help us count down the days, I made a hybrid Halloween Countdown Calendar. Follow along as I walk you through the project.

For my calendar base, I used Design 365 Month Masks by Carina Gardner.

Design 365 Month Masks

For paper and elements I used Haunted Paper Set 1, Haunted Paper Set 2, Haunted Tags, Haunted Bingo and Haunted Epoxy Brads all by Carina Gardner, and The Superstition Collection Word Art by Deena Rutter.

Haunted Collection, Superstition Word Art

Other supplies needed:

  • 12 x 12 inch black cardstock, letter stickers, paper trimmer, scissors, corner rounder, adhesive, page frame, ribbon or yarn
  • Optional: black distress ink, Stickles in Black Diamond and Diamond (or Crystal), Glimmer Mist
Step 1

Place the calendar mask onto an 11×8.5 canvas for ease of printing. Resize to fit.

Step 2
Clip desired papers to each calendar block, moving and resizing as necessary to show your favorite parts of the papers. Then select and copy the numbers and place on each day. Add drop shadows to each of the numbers.

Step 3
Because the mask has more than 31 blocks, I chose to merge the last several blocks to have a bigger spot for the day of Halloween. I used parts of various tags and bingo cards so I could incorporate more than one of the gorgeous illustrations on that block. Add “Happy Halloween” word art.

Step 4
Print calendar on matte presentation paper. On a separate sheet, also print additional tags and epoxy buttons to embellish the calendar. Cut out all pieces, rounding corners where needed. Ink all edges with black distress ink, if desired.

Step 5
Add mist and/or Stickles to embellishments. Set aside to dry.

Step 6
Adhere calendar blocks to 12 x 12 inch sheet of black cardstock.

Step 7
Adhere embellishments and title. Add Diamond Stickles to “Halloween” for extra emphasis. Let dry.

Slide in page frame and hang using ribbon or yarn.

You can use a dry erase mark to cross off each day or use a Halloween-themed window cling to move each day as you count down to Halloween!

Happy Halloween!
