4 Play

Monday is here and that means another 4 play! Each week we choose 4 kits from 4 Designers in the Design House Digital Shop to mix & match exclusively and share 4 different layouts by the Design House Decorators using those kits. The challenge is to ONLY use items from the 4 kits that are chosen.

This week I’ve chosen the following kits:

Shannon Hegarty’s Secretary Papers

Robyn Meierotto’s Mellow Alpha

Gennifer Bursett’s Toolbox Mists Vol. 6

Karla Dudley’s Right Now Elements

Let’s see how the Decorators combined these great kits!

Sarah Hemmert:

Sarah says: I have been looking for the perfect project to use Shannon’s papers, and paired with Karla’s elements is the perfect combo. I love the pops of color from Karla’s kit, and I used that to color the mist behind my photo. I had fun with my shadows too, I really wanted the elements to fit on the page. Mostly I just smudged the shadows, but for the tape, I used my dodge and burn tools to make it look like it is sticking the photo to the paper.

Jen Flaherty:

Jen shares: These kits are a great combination. This layout came together so easily! I’ve been wanting to do a page about this nickname for some time. The papers and elements were perfect for it!

Missy Backues:

Missy says: The patterns in Shannon’s Secretary papers are so neat I had to mix a couple together for my layout. I thought the numbers background went great with some recent photos of my daughters and friends while bowling. I changed my pics to black and white so the girls’ clothes wouldn’t clash with the perfect little accessories in Karla’s element pack. Robyn’s little handwritten alpha is so cute to add onto the page for the title, and I colored Gen’s mist with the blue from Karla’s tag to tie it all together. These kits worked so well together and I know I will enjoy playing around with all these kits again!

Carey Bridges:

I love Shannon’s papers and was looking for some neutral, all-purpose papers that could fit most any subject. Gen’s masked mists were perfect to add a splash of color as well as draw focus to and connect the photo and the journaling. Karla’s elements have great sentiments as well as boyish yet neutral colors that I had in mind for the sweet photo of my son. Finally, Robyn’s alpha, with the stitching and tape elements included in the kit, provided a simple and clean title to finish off the layout. I love how these kit came together so well!

Don’t forget that today only (ends Monday at midnight PST), you can get each of these kits for only a dollar, and one is even FREE! So go grab them, and then play along. Upload a layout using these four kits to the DHD gallery by Sunday, then come back here and post a link to it. Not only will you learn to stretch your kits, but you could win a gift certificate to DHD!

(Congratulations to Kate, who wins a gift certificate for playing along with last week’s challenge! Be sure to leave her some love in the gallery!)

1 Kit, 4 Ways – Monthly Bits – Funky

We’re back, and we’re happy to be here!

This week, we had the pleasure of working with Kate Teague’s Monthly Bits – Funky:

This set of calendars is all ready for the year 2011, but that’s not all it’s up for! Check out how some of the Design House Decorators and I used them:

Layout by Gennifer Bursett

I think sometimes we forget that we can use part of something, instead of the whole thing. By tucking the calendar portion behind my photo, it becomes the perfect accent for this poignant page about my father-in-law, who passed away earlier this year. This photo (taken last year at Thanksgiving) is the last one I have of him, and it happens to be the two of us, together. Layout by Jen Papadimitriou

Jen Papadimitriou says: “I love the look of mini calendars – especially fun and colourful ones like Kate’s Funky Bits! I thought they would be perfect to layer throughout my multi-photo layout to break up the liner look, plus add a splash of colour! I used them to represent each month it took for my daughter to finally learn to walk!” (Credits: Monthly Bits – Funky by Kate Teague; Template Collection 13 by Tiffany Tillman; Simply Boyish Alpha by Karen Funk)

Layout By Renee Fink

Renee Funk says: “I didn’t want to wait until 2011 to use these on a scrapbook page. A quick google search revealed that the year 1994 shared the same calendar as 2011. I have been in the process of scanning and scrapping all the photos we receive in our Christmas cards and so I just chose 1994 and scrapped those photos of our family and close friends.” (Credits: Monthly Bits – Funky by Kate Teague; Happy Christmas and Layered Layouts vol. 6 by Deena Rutter; Noted Doodle Stamps by Jen Allyson)

Calendar by Francine Clouden

Francine Clouden says: “I am in end of year gift making mode so as soon as I saw these I immediately thought of making a calendar. I made a template in photoshop with kraft cardstock as a background, then successively dropped in the month and a photo. Once printed out on photo paper I cut them out and matted them with kraft cardstock. The calendar plus photo measures 8″x3″ and the finished size is 8.5×3.5.” (Credits: Monthly Bits – Funky by Kate Teague; Neutral Stock by Audrey Neal; kraft cardstock by Bazzill)

So, how would you like a set of Kate’s Monthly Bits – Funky? All you have to do is comment here, and answer this: What’s your favorite day of the year?

(Congrats to flowersgal, last week’s winner. Can’t wait to see your lovely sun-washed vacation layouts!)
