How To Make a Hybrid Layout – Tutorial

Hello everyone! I’m very excited to be making my first post on the Design House Digital Blog! Today I will share how I made this 8.5×11 Hybrid Layout about my son playing at the park

Kits Used

Center Stage Template from Letter Layouts Volume 1 by Audrey Neal

Monster Jam Sticker Pack by Spencer Nugent

Daisy Jane Paper Bits by Carina Gardner

Martha, My Dear Seedling Paper Set by Deena Rutter

I love to use templates for hybrid layouts because it’s like having the design already done for me. All I need to think about is adding my special little bits!

This is what the Center Stage Template looks like

In Adobe Photoshop, I started by turning off the title, paper strip and title decor layers since I didn’t want to use those

Since I knew I’d be using kraft cardstock for my final background I dropped in a sheet from Neutral Stock by Audrey Neal, so I could have an idea of what my final page would look like.

Then I added my photos, paper and embellishments

And finally my journaling, using Century Gothic font. I also played a bit with the photo placement and sizing.  I love the flexibility of clipping masks for this very purpose!

At this point I am done with the digital side of things. Now to print!

I turned off the background and journaling papers, and printed the photos, paper and embellishments onto photo paper

Then printed just the journaling onto kraft cardstock

Then I cut out the photo/paper portion, put it all together, added my title and the date, and made a few adjustments

Finally I machine stitched around the edge of the cardstock.

And that’s it! This is pretty much the process I follow whenever I do a hybrid layout using a template as the starting point.  Remember, you can always switch off and discard whatever layers don’t work for you and make the design your own.

Until next time!

1 Kit, 4 Ways – Americana

Don’t you just love holidays? With the Fourth right around the corner, we’re ready to start the party early with Carina Gardner’s Americana kit:

Americana, by Carina Gardner

Don’t let the title fool you, though… this kit can be used for so much more! Check out what some of the Design House Decorators and I came up with, and stay tuned, because you could win it!

Layout by Gennifer Bursett

I thought these papers would lend themselves beautifully to this touching photo… the flag that covered my husband’s grandpa’s casket being handed to my sweet mother-in-law. I used Tiffany Tillman’s Tears Set 2, and attached the patterned papers to mimic the Stars and Stripes. Changing my photo to black and white helps to convey the somberness of the occasion, but I left the flag in color, so it remained the focus of the photo. Another tear in the bottom corner keeps the layout from looking too stark, and the addition of a stitched border ties it all together with a bit more texture.

Layout by Tiffany Bodily

Tiffany Bodily shares this: “Putting together this page celebrating our town’s Liberty Walk was easy when I combined this wonderful Americana kit and Summer Template 8 by Tiffany Tillman. I easily created a matching title by using a large block type font called Soopafresh which I then clipped the star paper to and used a stroke outline.”

Layout by Jennifer Valencia

Check out Jennifer‘s fun page: “I like Carina’s Americana kit because it can be used for traditional patriotic pages and for everyday pages, too. I wanted some nice deep reds and stars to go with these pictures of my niece with her doll, so I used the red star paper as a border to the photo line-up. I added Carina’s red and cream frames as an upper and lower border to the photos as well, and inserted some elements for visual interest (the brown shape and the stars.) I added a thick blue stroke to the stars to pick up the blue in my niece’s shirt. I wanted a subtle background to the page so the photos could pop, so I used the gorgeous yellow star paper, which has the perfect amount of texture to add visual interest without overpowering the photos.”

Layout by Theresa Marie Goon

Theresa Marie created this fun, graphic layout, and says this: “I only had a few Fourth of July photos, but really wanted to have a page showing the girls with Minh Lee watching the fireworks; such a fun memory! I love the photo! I used the “Americana kit” by Carina, as well as Deena Rutter’s “Layered Template No. 11,” from her Design 365 Layered Layouts, vol. 3.”

Layout by Renee Fink

Renee Fink made this fabulous page about a very special occasion: “When I saw this kit from Carina with the flag element I immediately knew that I wanted to use it to scrap these photos of the day that my children became American citizens. The photos are not great quality but the benefits of that extraordinary experience are enjoyed by our family every day. I started this layout with a template from Tiffany’s Template Collection 12 and modified it significantly. The placement of the blue star paper and the red striped paper mimics the Stars and Stripes. The title was created from the fonts Bodoni and Colonna and selected elements from the kits were used strategically in the title.”

Layout by Missy Backues

No need to be shy with your background, as Missy shows us: “I was drawn right away to the adorable red star background paper from the kit. I knew I had a photo of my youngest dd with a lot of blue on so that would be a nice contrast. (In fact my friend just emailed this photo to me recently so it was fresh on my mind!) I don’t think I’ve ever mixed in brown with a 4th of July layout before but I just loved the shape of the brown mat in the kit so I had to use it. I added some of the cute accents in the kit and tried to place them to cover up the people in the background. Then I used my color picker to select the same blue from the star accents and a few different fonts to create a title and then I added a thin white stroke outline to help it show up better against the red pattern. I also added a blue stroke outline to my photo. I look forward to scrapping with this kit again after the upcoming weekend’s holiday fun!”

Ready to win this kit? Comment here (whether you’re celebrating a national holiday, or in the middle of winter) and tell me what you plan to do this weekend. Me? We’ll be riding in a parade. Which reminds me… I’ve got five superhero costumes to create! Gotta go!

(Congrats to Carolyn, our fuchsia-loving lady! She’ll be scrapping up a storm with last week’s kit, Pretty Posy!)

Hybrid Christmas tags

Hi!

I used Jen Allyson’s Merry Little Christmas Papers digital kit to create these tags. LOVE this kit.

I drew a simple Christmas tree on the green stripe pattern paper, cut it out and added some glitter.

This tag is so much fun! LOVE the layers and all the different pattern papers. I just printed out the pattern papers, cut them into strips and just adhered them to my tag. I used the blue and white polka dot pattern paper from Carina Gardner’s Baby Mine kit on this tag as well.

How fun is it to add a photo!! The possibilities are endless!

I just LOVE pink and green together!! I used my Spellbinder’s Poinsettia die to create my embellishment.

This is one of my FAVOURITE Christmas digi kits…it’s filled with GORGEOUS pattern papers that are just perfect for creating hybrid Christmas cards and tags!!

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you all have a great day!

1 Kit, 4 Ways – Pretty Posy

Another Wednesday, another fabulous kit! This week, the Decorators and I had so much fun playing around with Carina Gardner’s Pretty Posy:

If it looks familiar, it may be because you already have it in your stash… Carina gave this kit away to all 500 people who liked her page on Facebook just last week! (Did you miss out? Don’t worry! You can still buy it in the shop, and we’ll be giving one away to a commenter, too!)

Layout by Gennifer Bursett, photo by Ashley Bursett

When my niece played around with my camera last month, I was pleasantly surprised by many of the photos she took. This one, of her cousin Alyssa playing in my shoes, really jumped out at me, and I knew Carina’s kit would be perfect with it! I enlarged the photo, and added the flower rub-on in some of the photo’s ‘white space.’ A bit of the grid paper across the top helped balance it out, and provided a spot for my title, while one edge of the larger label was just the right size for my subtitle. Sometimes, a few things are all you need to make a great page!

Layout by Lori Pickens

Decorator Lori Pickens created this perfectly pink layout, and says this: “Carina always makes the prettiest little girl kits! I knew that Pretty Posy would be perfect for this photo of my niece. I really loved the cream grid paper included in this kit. It is subtle enough to make a nice background, but has enough visual interest to really stand on its own. The flowers and frame made the perfect accents to finish off the look I wanted, and then I added one of scripts words from Deena Rutter’s A Kind Word vol 2 kit for my title.”

Layout by Renee Fink

Renee Fink shares this: “I extracted some of the flowers from the paper and elements in this kit to create a few additional embellishments. (Check out this wonderful tutorial by Audrey Neal if you don’t know how to extract images from patterned paper.) A larger version of the triple floral element was added to the bottom corner to create a visual triangle. I reduced the opacity to keep it from overpowering the other elements in the layout. The cream grid paper was the perfect background but I layered it on top of a few other papers so I could enjoy even more of Carina’s lovely floral creations.”

Layout by Katherine Bley

Wrapping us up this week is Katherine Bley: “Carina’s new kit is full of the most delicious posy patterns… perfect for using alone or several patterns in combination with one another. And because I LOVE combining patterns… I chose to use all five of them in a blocking format. The solid green in the lower right hand corner is simply a color sampled out from one of the posy papers with a subtle texture applied. Audrey Neal’s staples, from her Lovestruck kit, adds just the right touch to the layout making it appear is if holding the focal photo in place.”

What a fun and fabulous kit, don’t you think? Would you like to win it? Simply comment here, and tell me… what’s your favorite pink?

I must admit, I’m pretty partial to the shade of the shoes pictured in my layout. It’s a peachy salmon color, and it’s oh-so-grown up. (Not a fan? Let me know; you could still win. We don’t discriminate here.)

Check back this weekend, when Carina Gardner will be our Featured Designer. This means amazing deals on some of her kits, and one kit will be absolutely free! You can also chat with her online on Saturday, at 9AM MST… so stop on by!

(Congrats to Rachel M, who loves finding inspiration here at DHD. She’ll definitely be inspired with her new template.  And, as a special thank-you to everyone who said such nice things about us last week… check your e-mail for a little bit of love from us!)
