What is Digital Scrapbooking?

Digital Scrapbooking can be so many things. Really, it’s just the preserving of your memories and photos – but enhanced by design elements and organization. No one wants their photos to sit in a box — or now, with digital photography, on a hard drive. These days there are many alternatives to that dusty fate.

I think digital scrapbooking is the bee’s knees. Your photos are already on your computer just waiting for some love, so you’re halfway there! If you have previously been a paper scrapper, you know that in order to get from point A (the computer) to point B (the scrapbook album) there are many, many tasks. You have to send your photos to get printed, you have to go to the craft store to buy paper and glue and other supplies (probably several times if you’re like me), then you have to find the time to pull out all those things and coordinate them into a nice layout or set of layouts. And then mostly they hang out on the bookshelf, and you love them of course, that is the best part.

Digital Scrapbooking becomes the simplification of all those things. You don’t have to get your photos printed and you don’t have to even ever leave the house. You can go through all of your photos and choose any that you like and start playing with them immediately. You also don’t have to go out and buy supplies, since there are so many supplies at your fingertips. Any time day or night, you can visit this website, Design House Digital, and purchase any item that your heart desires, and within minutes, that item is yours, downloaded to your computer and ready for you to play. How easy is that!? So, once you’ve made your layout or series of layouts, you can either print directly at home, or you can upload your albums to an online service who will print and bind your books (as many as you like) and send them to you or your loved ones. Or if you’re like me, you can simply post those layouts on your blog orFacebook and share them with your entire family.

Who knew memory preservation and sharing could be so simple and appealing? Thats why I think it’s such a great thing. No longer do your photos need to sit neglected. You can do something with them today! That isn’t to say that I think everyone should give up paper crafting. Quite the contrary, I love paper, I design paper! But digital scrapbooking is a really great skill to learn and definitely has its place in every crafter’s home.

You can use digital scrapbooking supplies for things other than scrapbooking. Learning how to digital scrapbook is like learning how to be a graphic designer. Once you can manipulate pixels on your screen and know how to use Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, you will be able to create many different things.  My favorite things to create digitally are tags, gift boxes, party invitations, and home decor. These items are usually termed “hybrid” projects – and that is basically anything that you print and alter after printing. Digital scrapbooking kits can be used for all of these things, too. So really, they are just graphic element kits that you can let your imagination go wild with!

The possibilities of digital scrapbooking are endless. The skills you will learn as a digital scrapbooker are real skills in our digital age. The most important thing is to have fun. Design House Digital is a great community to learn, play, challenge yourself, and most importantly, tell your story!
