4 Play
I’m so excited to be bringing you this week’s 4 Play feature! In the spirit of the holiday season, I went with a very traditional holiday palette. Browns and blues give the red and green a contemporary twist, and the stylized brushes and worn papers give a nice contrast to each other.
- Roxie Stamps & Brushes
- This Christmas Elements
- Brown Paper Packages – Apple Strudel Paper
- Writer’s Block – Torn Journaling Pages
Let’s take a look at the layouts the Design House Decorators and I created!
I made a photoless layout about my favorite online store. While I normally use solid background papers, the simple pattern in subtle colors really spoke to me. Karen’s adorable present paper and Angie’s gift tag and bow help reinforce the shopping theme of my layout, and the shaped page gives me plenty of room for my journaling. Shannon’s brushes give some nice texture to the background, and I even turned one of them into a stylized Christmas tree using simple circles and a star.
Kat says: “What caught my eye on this week’s collection of 4Play kits were the bright red flowers and bows in Angie’s Christmas Elements kit – I had to use them! I ended up clustering a number of elements together, and added some of the brushes, recoloring them red, too. The frame from the brush set was a great vintage-style addition, and worked really well with my black and white photo. The torn journaling tags served as the perfect base for my photo and clustering, providing a little white to help balance out the stronger colors.”

Jennifer says: “Like Kat, I fell in love with the deep reds in Angie’s kit and knew I had to use those flowers somewhere. I felt they would go perfectly with a black and white portrait I’d taken of my sister’s family. I used one of Gennifer’s labels to add some texture and visual interest, and added a few circles clipped with a greeny paper of Karen’s for some pops of extra Christmas color. Another of Karen’s papers was a perfect backdrop for the photo, and the dot on the letter “j” was replaced with a brush by Shannon (colored red.) I love seeing red at Christmas time!”
Mary says: “I have a ton of photos of Hayden and his girlfriend Abby from the Christmas dance last year that I really wanted to get scrapped and into his book. The colors and elements chosen for this week required me to convert my photo to black and white, which I think is always very classy. I loved Karen’s papers and used a pattern for my background (which is very unusual for me)….I reduced the opacity just a bit. I added a color layer to Gennifer’s writers block element and rotated it. Angie’s beautiful tag, flowers and ribbons were the perfect romantic touch. I finished everything off using Shannon’s stamps adding a few dots, and a label holder for my title.”
