Owl Treat Box – Free template and tutorial

Valentines day is right around the corner, no better time to get your little Valentine treasures all ready to give.

This free template is available on my blog at www.deenarutter.typepad.com .

Here I will show you how I used the template to personalize my little owl.

I used some paper from my SCOOT collection as well as the template.

Open up the paper you want to use.  I used SCOOT-hills-white for the box.

Place the pillow box template and make a clipping mask.

Place the other paper you want to use for the wings.  I used SCOOT-dots-white.

Make a clipping mask with the wings too.

Place the rest of the images as layers on your canvas.

I put my owl face directly onto my pillow box.

Print.

Get scissors, glue, scoring tool, pencil, and ribbon.

Cut around images.

Trace box template on back side of pillow box.

Score where you traced and crease.

Glue flap onto the inside of the owl.

Glue wings onto the back of the owl.

Punch a small hole through the top of the pillow box.

Thread the ribbon through and tie at the top.

Fill pillow box from the bottom with your goodies.

Flaps will fold right up into place if creased correctly.

Thanks for checking out this little tutorial.  Personalize your owls and add them to the DHD gallery!

Package Makes Perfect – Easter Style

Here are some fun and inspiring ways we here at Design House Digital are celebrating Easter… and having fun doing it!

drutter-easterboxes-topper

For these little gift holders I used my Happier Complete Paper Collection, Take Out Box Template, Basic Box Template, and the Happier Easter Kit.

drutter-easterinvite

Here you see how I used my Easter Kit Paper along with the Happier Photocards, Party Helpers for the wordart, and my cute little digital cut bunny slider to make an Easter party invitation.

drutter-easterbasket

For this sweet little basket that I filled with yummy sugar cookies that I made (I am going to have to pick up the cardio this week…ate too many!), I used the Happier Party Helpers & Happier Easter Kit. The basket is a cutting file you can find for free on my blog.

Peeps_TopperThese sweet little Peep Treats were made by the very creative DHD decorator, Jenny Bingham.  So cute.  These are the next on my list of Easter treats to make for our little neighborhood friends. Jenny used my Happier Paper Collection and Happier Complete Elements for this bag topper project.

Here’s to a Happy Spring and a wonderful Easter.  Have fun creating and don’t be shy about posting  your projects in our gallery.  We love to see what you create!

Tutorial: How to use masks in Photoshop Elements

full of surprisesToday I am going to show you how versatile my cutting files can be.  I always include PNG files in all of my digital cutting file kits that can be used as masks in your digital layouts. If you have a personal cutting machine, then all the better!  You can use them to cut paper or to mask digitally. Right now we are going to focus on using PNG files as masks.

step1 Open the 3 jpg paper files you’d like to use in Photoshop Elements. I used Deena Rutter’s “Happier” collection.
• DHD-drutter-happier-fullgarden
• DHD-drutter-happier-pink
• DHD-drutter-happier-blue
step2 Then I open 3 png files I’d like to use. I used Deena Rutter’s
• DHD-drutter-openscallop.png

• DHD-drutter-circlescallop.png

• DHD-drutter-bracketedge.png

found in the D-cut Diecut Paper Edges Kit.
step3 Lets get started by opening up your base layer of paper and the bracket edge file
step4

Click and drag the bracket edge .png file on top of the pink paper copy. Place it right in the center of your page.  I also like to close out my bracket edge.png file one I’ve placed it, just so I don’t get confused.

step6
Unlock your background image (Pink paper) by double-clicking on the layer and name it something. I’m going to call mine, “Pink”.

Now that my Pink copy is unlocked, I’m going to make it the top layer. I can do this by clicking on the image on my right hand layers panel and drag to the top.
step7 I’m going to take my mouse right between the pink copy and the black png on the right hand side, while holding down the ALT key. You’ll see an arrow with two stacked circles. Now use your mouse to click.

step8
And voila!! You’ve clipped your base layer.  Now I’ll minimize this and move along to my patterned paper.
step9
I’m using Deena’s Happier full garden paper and my circle scallop.png for my next layer. I’m going to repeat steps 4  to click and drag my .png file to where I’d like to have it on my patterned paper. Repeat step 5, and  rename the “locked” pattern paper to be called “Full Garden”. Repeat step 6 and change it to be the top layer.
step10
Repeat step 7 to clip the patterned paper to be the scalloped circle shape.
step11
Now, I want it to be an image itself. I’m going to highlight both my layers (shift+click) and right click on my mouse and select MERGE LAYERS.
step12
I can click on one single layer and drag it to be the top layer on my pink sheet.

step13

I add my photo and a few other Deen Rutter “Happier” elements and there you have it!! Happy Clipping!! Hope this tutorial made you a little “Happier”!

Tutorial: How to use cut files to make canvas art

This do-it-yourself Matryoshka Doll canvas art is perfect for shower gifts, little girl birthday presents, or decor for your own home. Don’t shy away thinking it will be too difficult…my 4 year old daughter and I made this for her friend in about 30 minutes…(with a little pbskids during drying time).  You could cut and make multiples of this and be ready for every little girl party in 2010!

1 all done
This is the Mytroshka Doll Cutting File that you’ll need. If you do not have a personal cutting machine, you can download the cutting file, open up the jpg folder, print each file separately, use as a pattern/template, and cut by hand.

1.     First choose your desired paper.  I used scraps from my Penny Lane + Abbey Road Collections for My Mind’s Eye, as well as other papers from my stash.
