2011 One Little Word Reminder

Every year I choose a word to guide me in achieving my goals. I started doing this back in 2007 after seeing Ali Edwards post about it. I like to make little reminders for my desk and work spaces to keep as a reminder, and this year I dreamed up a simple postcard on a clip.

Here are the steps I used to make it.

1. In Photoshop I created a new 6″x4″ document at 300 dpi

2. I then added a smaller rectangle on a new layer, sized 5.5″x3.5″

3. I clipped the patterned paper from Karla Dudley’s Togetherness kit to the smaller rectangle, and moved it around until I liked the portion of the pattern that was showing.

4. I then added the word “THRIVE” using the Baby Birdie font by Audrey Neal

5. Then a label from Sophistication Journaling Tags by Sara Schmutz, with the notation “One Little Word 2011″

6. To make the stand I hot glued a wooden skewer to an alligator clip

Then propped the clip plus image inside a vintage silk thread spool.

Are you choosing a One Little Word for the year?

Mini Mini Me {Hybrid}

It’s all about you sometimes right? Of course it should be so why not start scrapbooking about yourself, doing your own favorite quirk albums, and or qoutes. Today I am going to show you a mini I made using a variety of different elements from different digital packs.

First thing you want to do is batch print your elements for easier cutting and to save paper. I always insert them into a collage format and then save it as a jpeg. I would open my word document and insert images and print them all together.

Step1dhd

I am not a huge fan of my handwriting so sometime before I print I will type in what I would like to say on the journal spots and or pages so that it is pretty neat and only chance using my own handwriting in some parts of the page or album.

Step2dhd
Once you print out your designs that you are going to use in your mini get some of your favorite patterned paper that you wish to use to either match or go hodge podge with it and gamble with playing around with color. Cut your papers down to the size of your choice.

Step3dhd
Now that you have your ideas flowing start putting your album together in no particular order just have fun with it, does not have to be exact on what your thoughts are. I truly believe that each page should be unexpected which is probably why I do not have all of my albums put together based on kids, holidays and or vacations. When you turn the page you get something different it keeps it excited and stimulating for those that you are force feeding your memories to.  Once you are satisfied with your cards lay them out and randomly choose what order to put them in.

Step4dhd
After you put it all together punch yourself some holes in it and you are  all finished.

I hope you have been inspired to create yourself a mini album all about you. I used the following items 365 journal cards , schools in session journal tagslove me digital elements, worn journal tags.

Remember it is all about hitting the print key, relaxing and enjoying the process.

Dress Up Your Space: “Create Bunting”

Hello everyone! Here is another non-paper project using digital items. I confess that since I discovered tee-shirt transfer paper I want to use it all the time. I made this bunting for my scrap space using the transfer paper and the Banner kit by Deena Rutter.

Apart from the kit you will need an iron, plain fabric and patterned fabric, pinking shears, ribbon or twill and a sewing machine.

I wanted the colours of the bunting to be grey and yellow, but the kit didn’t contain any grey triangles, so I recoloured the blue ones to grey. To do this I added a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, checked the Colorize box, and played with the sliders until I got the colour I wanted.

Then I added the letters to spell out Create on alternating yellow and grey triangles. I used the custom shape tool to add the heart shapes.

Once printed out onto the transfer paper, I ironed them to the triangles cut from the plain fabric.

Then I stitched the smaller triangle to the larger patterned triangle.

Once all the triangles were complete, I stitched them to my twill and hung it over my shelf.

You can use different colours and words to adapt this to any occasion, like birthday parties and also for the upcoming holidays.

Isn’t it great all the kinds of projects we can use digital kits for?

Hybrid Christmas Mini Album

We will be spending the holidays with my family and I want to leave my Mum a reminder when we say goodbye, so I decided to pre-make a mini-album which I will later fill with photos from Christmas Day.

I used Deena Rutter’s Happy Christmas kit, as well as one tag element from the free Christmas kit.

Once I decided to use the Teresa Collins bracket album, I printed out some of the patterned papers to make the pages, by printing onto both sides of cardstock weight white paper. I designed journaling spots and photo mats in Photoshop and also printed those out.

I used one of the Theresa Collins die-cut pages as a template to cut my own pages out from the patterned paper. Once I had the pages done, I printed and cut out the journaling spots and photo mats. Then I put the pages together alternating journaling spots and photo mats. I added holiday stickers to the bottom of each photo mat.

Finally I assembled the album using my Bind-it-All machine.

I plan to crop my photos to 4″x4″ to fit the photo mats. I was actually going for a sort of Polaroid look.

I tried to stick with a fairly muted palette since the photos from Christmas Day will probably be quite colourful! I’ll be sure to take photos of the final book to share before I give it to my Mum!

Hybrid Christmas Art

Here are two simple canvases that I made using the free Christmas kit you can download when you subscribe to the DHD newsletter.

I used canvas board as my background.

For the Christmas Tree Scene, I used the snowflake paper, and white cardstock for a wintery backdrop. Then I cut the triangle shapes out of the patterned paper which I had printed out. Finally I cut trunks for the trees from brown cardstock.

I used a PVA glue that dries clear (similar to ModPodge) to stick the scene to the canvas board. Then I painted the entire thing with another coat of the glue as a fixative.

The single tree was made by cutting strips of varying widths and lengths, and then constructing the tree shape. I punched out a star shape for the top, and used some patterned paper from Sasafrass Lass to make the trunk.

This is a nice little project that can add some holiday cheer to your home!
